With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can protect your VMs the way you want it: you can back up locally, offsite, and to public clouds.

VMware and Hyper-V Backup

NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports Exchange, Active Directory, MS SQL, SharePoint, Oracle, and other applications and databases, ensuring that all backups are consistent and can be recovered. In addition, the product can truncate Exchange and SQL log files to reduce required storage.

All VM backup jobs are forever-incremental and transfer only changed data to the backup repository. This significantly speeds up VM backup and reduces the network load. On top of that, NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses VMware’s Changed Block Tracking (CBT) and Hyper-V’s Resilient Change Tracking (RCT) technologies to quickly identify what data has changed since the last job run.

For each VM backup, you can save up to 1,000 recovery points and – using the Grandfather-Father-Son retention policy – rotate them on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. To learn more, refer to the VMware Backup and Hyper-V Backup topics.

Backup Copy

Backups can be lost due to a number of reasons: accidental backup deletion, backup file corruption, disk failure, lost or stolen hardware, malicious attack, or due to some other undesired and unpredicted event. Thus, having more than one copy of your business-critical backups is vital for ensuring that your data can be recovered in case of a disaster. Backup Copy jobs provide a simple yet powerful way to create and maintain copies of your backups. Backup Copy jobs copy backups from one Backup Repository to another, without touching the source hosts or source VMs. This way your source VMs are read only once, while backups can be copied to one or multiple locations.

Global Backup Deduplication

NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically deduplicates VM backups at the block level and ensures that only unique data is saved in the backup repository. All VM backups are deduplicated across an entire backup repository – regardless of how many jobs you have. To further reduce data size, NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically compresses each block of data so it occupies even less storage space in a backup repository.

Skip Swap Data

Swap files and partitions serve as a temporary storage for data that is not currently used by RAM. The contents of the swap file change constantly, so each time you back up a VM, the swap file is included in the backup, which means that gigabytes of unnecessary data are processed, transferred, and stored in the backup repository each time you back up a VM. NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically skips the swap file in VMware and Hyper-V VMs, which speeds up data transfer and saves storage space in a backup repository. Built-In VM Replication

VM replication creates and maintains an identical copy of a source VM on a target host. The copy of the source VM – called a VM replica – is a regular VM that is available in VMware vSphere or Hyper-V. VM replicas remain in the powered off state and do not consume any resources, yet you can simply power them on in case of a disaster.

With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can create up to 30 recovery points for a VM replica. Each recovery point is a regular VM snapshot, so if a source VM has been damaged, you can easily return the VM replica back to a previous good state even without NAKIVO Backup & Replication. Military-Grade Encryption

Sending your data offsite over the Internet without a VPN connection can present a threat to data security. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can encrypt your data in flight and at rest using AES-256 encryption standard.

Instant Screenshot Verification for VM Backups

NAKIVO Backup & Replication can near-instantly verify your VM backups. After a backup is completed, the product instantly recovers the VM directly from the compressed and deduplicated backup repository, makes a screenshot of the booted OS, discards the test-recovered VM, and sends a report with the screenshot via email.

Instant Recovery from VM Backups

With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can instantly recover entire VMs, Microsoft Exchange objects (such as emails), Microsoft SQL Server objects (such as databases and tables), Microsoft Active Directory objects (such as users and groups), and files of Windows-based and Linux-based VMs. Recovery is performed directly from the compressed and deduplicated backup repository, and you don’t need to install agents, run a special VM backup type, or pre-recover a VM or a database.

Calendar Dashboard and Flexible Job Scheduler

Calendar Dashboard displays all the past, current, and future jobs in a simple calendar view and allows for easy scheduling of backup jobs in large environments while avoiding schedule overlaps. Flexible Job Scheduler enhances job scheduling by allowing to add multiple schedules to a single job.

High VM Backup and Replication Performance

NAKIVO Backup & Replication has been designed to deliver the highest levels of performance for VM backup, replication, and recovery. Multi-Threading enables NAKIVO Backup & Replication to run multiple VM backup, replication, and recovery jobs simultaneously, which speeds up data processing and shortens the time windows allocated to VM data protection. LAN-free data transfer mode (Direct SAN Support and Hot Add) offloads networks while significantly increasing data transfer speeds. Network Acceleration uses compression and traffic reduction techniques to speed up data transfer. On average, this results in a network load reduction of 50% and a data transfer acceleration of 2X.
